Memory
living in texture

Sept. - Oct. 2023
Personal project
PBR digital material is a reproduction of the moment of a real thing. The reason why we can all look at digital materials and recognize what they are is because we all have memories of the past that we all share in relation to the material. Looking around the static material library, memories of the past are constantly being revived in our minds.

The project began with a visit to the Digital Texture Library. The materials looked like they were about to move in a minute; at the same time, they were very artificially static. In this still space, a collection of fleeting moments in reality, I found myself looking for images with applied materials.

I became curious about the reason, and spent 24 minutes in this space tracking my behavior.

And I came up with two questions,

Why am I looking for an rendering image?
What information am I using in the process of
determining whether the material is 'realistic'?

We need 'context,' that is, memories of the past connected to us when we identify objects. As shown by William Labov's semantic boundaries of the concepts described by the words cup and bowl study ("The Boundaries of Words and Their Meanings," William Labov), even if we look at an object, each individual's experience projecting is different.

With the desire to visualize the context of the material, I began to collect fragments of our memories contained in the material. Memories of the past that emerge vaguely are fragmented and vague, but based on that, we recognize objects and communicate with others. Although it is impossible to know exactly what the mosaic images behind the video are, it is a clue to predict what the material moving in front of it is.

︎Upcomming question

- Will the digital native generation, who acquire information through online
media from birth, have less diversity of experience?

- Will this result show higher unity in recognizing objects than older generations?

- What composition helps the perception of Digital Texture?
